Flaunt It! Fashionable Fiber ArtsSunday, October 52:00 - 4:00 p.m.Should of been there . . . See what you missed! Photos from the event. Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased by September 28.Inventions such as the cotton gin, knitting machines and power looms changed textile production, eventually leading to mass produced consumer goods. Because the new inventions alleviated the workload of women and allowed for affordable purchases, many chose not to do handcrafts. However, a few select people have continued the tradition, keeping the art alive. In our region today, there are numerous guilds that support and educate interested students in the fine arts of spinning, weaving, knitting and crocheting. It is with great pleasure that the museum hosts a style parade of our talented local fiber artist’s work. The Prairie Fiber Spinners and Weavers and Plum Nelly have generously offered to help raise funds for the museum through this special showing of their work and products. On Sunday, October 5, members of the guild will model their work while guests enjoy elegant desserts. In the past, the guild helped the museum in a similar event featuring bog style clothing. This year’s event will be different because the models will be wearing a variety of styles and garments, demonstrating unlimited use of fibers in clothing and accessories. The event will also feature a silent auction of various items including woven scarves and special jewelry created for this event by Carla Kocher, owner of Beads and Botanical here in Hastings. After the style show, members of the guild will demonstrate how fibers are spun into yarn and then woven into cloth. A small display of historic pieces will be on exhibit for the event, including work created by Irma Cruse, a well-known weaver from Hastings. Updated October 6, 2008
