Greece: Secrets of the Past

The Magic of Ancient Greek Civilization Comes to Life in Greece

Parthenon
The Parthenon, the world-famous temple, was erected in 447 BC to honor the goddess of wisdom, Athena.

Allow yourself to be transported back in time and experience the thrill of a volcanic explosion, uncover a lost civilization, catch a glimpse of the Parthenon ruins, admire a 40-foot statue of the Goddess Athena and see for yourself the birthplace of Western Civilization and democracy. Greece: Secrets of the Past will allow you to do just that.

Travel along with Dr. Christos Doumas, a leading Greek archeologist who is working to piece together the puzzle of ancient Greece and better understand its influence on life today. Along with Dr. Doumas, Dr. George Vougioukalakis, a volcanologist is studying the devastating ancient explosion on the island of Santorini. Ancient Minoan towns were buried in 1646 BC by the most powerful volcanic eruption in history. You will travel directly into the volcanic phenomenon known as pyroclastic flows which covered and preserved unsuspecting towns in volcanic ash. Discover along with the archeologists at the excavation site near Akrotiri, clues to the everyday lives of the Bronze Age Greeks, from the clothes they wore to the foods they ate.

Grasp a piece of time from 500 BC to 400 BC when the Greek empire was the world’s premiere center of thought and art, pursuing the very limits of human possibility, as it laid the foundations for the way we live today. From the Olympic games, the imaginative Greek Myths, the beginnings of modern theatre, to the study of mathematics, physics, architecture, biology, zoology, politics and ethics, among other academic fields that have changed the world.

Take a trip to Athens and see for yourself the ruins of Greece’s very own Parthenon. The temple erected in 447 BC symbolized wealth, power and democratic ideals and honored the goddess of wisdom, Athena. Using the cutting-edge in computer modeling, the film recreates what the Parthenon would have looked like in all its glory at the height of the Greek empire and allows you to see for yourself the ivory and gold statute of Athena.

Bask in the beauty of the majestic Greek islands and observe the ruins, legends and new discoveries that teach us of a vanished civilization. Experience the splendor of Greece at the Lied Super Screen Theatre.

Helping to bring a fun, contemporary edge to this tale of a centuries-old civilization is the film’s narrator, Nia Vardalos, the Greek American actress who rose to the top writing and starring in the run-away cross-cultural romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding, garnering both an Academy Award® nomination for Best Screenplay and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
